Cindy: Are you making any New Year's resolutions for 2014? Have you promised yourself you're gonna lose 25 pounds, and you're gonna join the gym and go three to four days a week? Well, those are great goals. And one thing to consider is, choose goals that are doable because you can come up with pipe dreams and never reach them. But if you really wanna make an impact on your life, your health, your body, and your fitness, then choose something you know you're gonna do. Instead of saying you're gonna join the expensive gym and go three times a week, consider just moving your body every day. You can take a walk, you can stretch, you can lift some weights, you can dance, you can jump rope, you can go play tennis. Take a look at your life now and what you're doing now and when you do move your body, what are you doing? Are you cleaning out closets? That can mean taking a walk with a friend. Then maybe do a little bit more of that or choose something that you enjoy, pleasure.
Go after what pleasures you because you're sure to do that. So, today I am going to interview a friend of mine who I had not seen in many years. We used to work together. She was a fashion model and I was a makeup artist. And we've gotten back in touch and I have discovered that at age 50, she is a competing triathlete and raising four kids. So, let's find out how she found her passion then had her go after what she wanted to do. I'm so excited to introduce you to Lisa Fallon Mindel, who is the founder and creator of Whole Body Beautiful. And I can't wait to find out what is making you so passionate about staying as fit and healthy as you are, Lisa.
Lisa: Yes. Well, hi. Nice to be here. I've been passionate about health most of my life, but I think my passion, what drives me is really to try to stay healthy and happy to keep, through diet and nutrition and exercise, keep feeling motivated, energetic, and alive.
Cindy: Fantastic. And what do you do in your life that has you want to feel so good and healthy?
Lisa: Oh, boy. Having four children, having a busy life. I'm also a triathlete, so I race and compete in triathlon, which keeps me pretty busy. So, being athletic is a pretty big passion of mine right now.
Cindy: Fantastic. So, who are your clients?
Lisa: Well, my clients range from people who wanna lose weight to some health challenges, heart, cardiovascular, and also I deal with athletes, athletes who are looking to dial in their training with health, nutrition, endurance, energy, that kind of thing.
Cindy: I see. So, what do you actually do as a holistic health practitioner?
Lisa: What I do is what I call, well, I balance the whole foods and the soul foods. We can talk about diet, what you're eating, your energy, how you're bringing in your fats, your carbs, your proteins. And then we'd also balance it out by talking about the soul foods in your life or are you happy? How's your work? Are you sleeping enough? Are you exercising? Are you in a relationship that's respectful? And between the two, we kind of balance out your health, and it takes the two to have a good balance.
Cindy: So, that's where the word whole comes in in holistic health?
Lisa: Oh, yes. Mind, body, and spirit. Yeah. All comes together.
Cindy: Wonderful. And as far as diet, what do you think is a healthful diet?
Lisa: Well, it's trying to bring in healthful foods, real foods. I always say food is your fuel. And I hate to say the cliche, "You are what you eat." You really think about what you're eating and what energy you're getting from it. Leafy Greens, good proteins, whole complex carbohydrates, a lot of water, and some good fluids, balancing out your exercise, it all works. It's all step by step. You're not gonna do anything overnight. So, what I tell people I work with is it, let's start off drinking some more water, let's bring in some leafy greens first. So, it's not overwhelming. You're not starting these goals that are not gonna be achievable. And through this step by step process, it all falls together and you start feeling better.
Cindy: So, do you find when clients come to you and they, say, have a goal of losing 10 pounds, that once they start to lose the weight, they get motivated to continue?
Lisa: Well, it's not as, you know, I'm sure everyone's heard, it's not a diet, it's a lifestyle. But as I said, they will lose the weight, they will be cleansing naturally. It's not just a week cleanse and then you go off, it's learning how what foods to incorporate on a daily basis, what foods to bring in. So, naturally, you're gonna be cleansing, naturally, you'll be getting more energy, naturally, you're gonna be losing weight and have your body become down to the weight where it really needs to be. Bring down the inflammation, start cutting out the sugars, and all of a sudden you're gonna start feeling where you should be because your body really wants to be in balance, it wants to be healthy.
Cindy: So, what do you think would be some good tips for the average person who wants to improve their health and their fitness?
Lisa: Well, I would say, as I said, make those shorter term goals first, step by step, enjoy what you're doing. Don't take things too seriously, if you fall off one day, don't say, "That's it." Just start incorporating, as I said, more water, some really healthy, nutritious foods. Remember the foods that you're eating have an energy. If you're gonna eat a packaged chip, you're not gonna get much energy out of that. So, I think, just by slowly taking each day, step by step, getting some support, having some people around you that think and start eating the same way you are helps a lot as well. Or consult someone like me or someone in the health holistic or exercise field that can help support you.
Cindy: So, what do you do if a client calls you, they've gone for two weeks eating fresh fruits and vegetables and the healthiest food you can imagine and they go, "Oh, no. I just ate a whole box of Oreos. What do I do?"
Lisa: I say, "It's okay. Move on. Oh, no. It's fine." The more you start incorporating that kind of food, as I said, you don't wanna think of it as the two weeks, but every day just bringing in a little something good because each day you bring something good in, it's gonna crowd out the bad. So, I don't tell people, "You can't have this, can't have that." I'm saying, "Hey, let's have some more fruit, let's have some more vegetables, let's have a little bit of lean protein." And all of a sudden, they're gonna start eating that way. And those days where they're gonna fall off or it's a holiday, or most people I work with will just get back on the healthy trail because that's how they wanna eat. I have women maybe from in their 40s on right now, a lot of women who come to me because they realize now is the time to really start taking things a little more seriously as not in a diet, but how do I incorporate all this because I wanna live til I'm 80 or 90 or 100. I don't wanna go on these fad diets, I don't wanna go up and down. I'm feeling I need some more energy, I've gained weight around the middle. What can I do? There's a whole bunch of things that we talk about from weight, food, hormones. It goes on. So, when I work with people, it's usually...it's not just let's talk for an hour, we go through a program. And by the end, they understand their body, their mind, and the process.
Cindy: It sounds like you're really an educator.
Lisa: Yes. For sure. Because I think you have to understand a little bit. You'll understand...the first step is becoming aware. I think just with us talking, whoever is listening, their mind's gonna start and they're gonna think about what we've talked about. And that's the first step, is just awareness. Then I bring them to awareness of shopping in the grocery store and preparing and what...do they have stuff available? What's your schedule like? Are they working 50 hours a week or are they at home? Everybody's different, everybody's an individual. What you require is different from what I require. So, that's why I like to work on, I work on an individual basis. I do have some groups, too, I work with, which is really fun, big support. And I find, as I said, the education is important.
Cindy: That's fantastic. Sounds wonderful. Sign me up. Okay. So, how do we find you, Whole Body Beautiful?
Lisa: Well, I'm on wholebodybeautiful.com or lisa@wholebodybeautiful.com, you can email me. It's also on the website. And yup, you'll have some great recipes on there too to start your way from some great smoothies in the morning to some dinners and soups and all kinds of things. And I have a newsletter, if they want they can sign up on, on wholebodybeautiful.com.
Cindy: Okay. Are you also on Facebook.
Lisa: I am. That's actually on Lisa Fallon Mindel on Facebook.
Cindy: Okay.
Lisa: Whole Body Beautiful on Instagram.
Cindy: I have a question for you.
Lisa: Yes.
Cindy: What is the last thing you drank or ate today?
Lisa: I got something here.
Cindy: Oh, my god. That's beautiful. What is it?
Lisa: It's kind of infused water and what I do is I take a jar and I fill this up. I filled this morning earlier with raspberries, lemons, oranges, fresh mint. And I let it sit there. And so as I said, hydration's really important, it doesn't have to be boring.
Cindy: That is absolutely gorgeous.
Lisa: This is what I call my vitamin water. The pure vitamin water without the sugar.
Cindy: So, you really are replacing things that are less than helpful with things that are extremely helpful. You have certainly created a lot of motivation. Thank you so much, Lisa.
Lisa: Thank you.
Cindy: Have a wonderful 2014.
Lisa: Thank you.
Cindy: And may everybody be impacted by all this positive, wonderful information.
Lisa: Thank you.
Cindy: Yay.
