Life Has Become Your Own
“The most pleasurable thing about getting older is not having to worry about being young. I think the self-consciousness, the anxiety, the concerns about what is the norm? What is the trend? Really, at 70, that kind of goes away. It’s a gigantic burden lifted off of me.”
—Judith, age 70
“If you’ve lived to at least your 50s, you have stories to tell, you have history. That’s what gives you the confidence to forge ahead.”
—Jody, age 59
“I don’t feel as if I’m on any deadlines anymore. I feel as if my life is really my own. I’ve made a lot of choices that have brought me to this place. And it’s kind of freeing to not have to worry about, will I get married? Will I have children? Will I be successful at my job? And just be who you are. It’s very freeing.”
—Polly, age 61
“There’s more space. And there’s more space to take in, there’s more space to be, there’s more space to connect with people without us having to have a result or a job connected to it. It’s like I can just be.”
—Donna, age 75
“By 70, you know who you are, and you just live being that person.”
—Betty, age 70
More Comfortable in Your Own Skin
“When I was 25, there was a lot of insecurity going on. Now, I’m in my 50s, I’m like, stuff it. I’ve been on this planet for 55 years. It’s like a whole different universe.”
—Erica, age 55
“I am so less worried about what other people think or what I’m supposed to do.”
—Laurie, age 58
“I feel so much more comfortable in my skin and at ease with who I am. I thought I was confident, but in retrospect, I realize there was so much need to fit in and looking for approval from other people. Now, I’m just happy with where I am and who I am.”
—Rene, age 55
“I enjoy myself much more at this stage of my life because I’m comfortable with who I am and I know what I’m doing.”
—Ruth, age 68
“Before 60, I was always trying to please people. At 60, I just became liberated. I started to rise, but now I’m soaring. I just feel that confidence and comfort with just being who I am is phenomenal.”
—Emily, age 66
Smarter, Wiser and Happier
“I feel life smarter than I did 40-ish years ago. And I feel like there’s more of me inside that I want to bring out.”
—Joanna, age 64
“I’m more patient with myself. I’m happier with what I’ve done in the world, and I know a bit more about what’s really important.”
—Anna, age 69
