Fatty Acids and You: A Love Story
Linoleic acid. Omega 3s. Alpha-linoleic acid. What do these all have in common?
They are all essential building blocks of your skin. They’re part of your body’s largest organ and the barrier between you and the elements, including dry air, UV rays and germs.
Your skin is made up of fats, proteins, water, minerals and chemicals. With these ingredients, your skin forms a protective barrier against the world.
As we age, our skin begins to change… Proteins abundant at the beginning of our lives begin to break down. Healing slows. Our skin thins and becomes more vulnerable to damage and moisture loss.
Slowing water loss and replenishing proteins and fats are essential in protecting our skin as we age.
At BOOM!, we design our skin care to support your skin after 50. That’s why our nourishing serum and lightweight facial oil include fatty acids, an essential building block of your skin.
How do these fatty acids work? Read on for details.
What are Fatty Acids?
Fatty acids are the building blocks of fats. Your body breaks down the fats you consume into fatty acids which are then either burned for energy or reincorporated into your body, including the fat cells in your skin.
The thickest layer of your skin—called the hypodermis—is made up almost entirely of fat.
Some of the fatty acids that make up the fat in the hypodermis can be created within your body. Others, called “essential fatty acids,” must be added in order for your body to make the fats it needs.
These fatty acids can be consumed as part of your diet or you can apply them topically because they absorb easily through your skin.
Fatty Acids and Your Skin
The hypodermis, or fat layer, helps your skin stay plump. It’s also home to the proteins collagen and elastin, which help your skin look smooth and firm.
The fats in your skin also have other jobs. They protect against water loss, reduce inflammation and irritation, guard against sun damage and speed healing.
When we don’t consume enough fats or the right kind of fats, our skin can suffer. It can become dry and inflamed.
On the other hand, when your skin has easy access to these essential nutrients, it looks and feels more radiant.
That’s why two of our Boom favorites include all-natural ingredients that deliver the fatty acids your skin needs to look and feel healthy.
Fatty Acids in Boom
Our lightweight facial oil, Boom Gold, is made with eight all-natural oils, including tamanu oil, kukui nut oil and raspberry seed oil—all of which are rich sources of fatty acids.
Boom Gold also contains grapeseed oil, a rich source of linoleic acid. This omega-6 essential fatty acid helps keep your skin looking and feeling healthy.
Both tamanu and kukui nut oil are important sources of linoleic and alpha-linolenic fatty acids. These fatty acids improve your skin’s texture and help repair sun damage. They’re also important components of your skin’s barrier, which keeps germs out and moisture in.
Boom Nectar, our more robust moisturizing serum, contains hemp seed oil and rosehip oil, both of which are rich sources of fatty acids.

Hemp seed oil contains both linoleic and alpha-linolenic acids, which are necessary for building healthy fat. Hemp seed oil also delivers antioxidants and has an anti-inflammatory effect.
Meanwhile, the rosehip oil in Boom Nectar contains nourishing fatty acids that help hydrate and repair the skin.
The liquid formulas of both Boom Gold and Boom Nectar absorb quickly and deeply to deliver fatty acids where they’ll do the most good, sustaining some of your skin’s most important functions.
That makes your skin happy. And happy skin makes us happy.
