5 Makeup Tips for Older Women.

How to bring out your natural beauty at 50, 60, 70 and beyond

1. Use Cream-based Cosmetics on your face (not powder-based).

Powder adds texture to skin that already has developed texture.
2. Find a tone of lipstick that matches your inner lip or gums.
3. Don’t recreate the brows you had in your 20s.

Women older than 50 tend to lose definition in their eyebrows. Just go with that.
4. Do not wear any eyeshadow at all.

Especially no contour in the crease because it gives the appearance of deepening the crease. A little bit of mascara is OK.
5. Tinted Moisturizers don’t work.

If you’re going to use a foundation to even out skin tone, find one that gives coverage but doesn’t add texture. Be willing to spend money on a foundation and take your time to experiment and find the exact right shade. Matching your skin tone exactly is critical.

Our late founder, Cindy Joseph, spent 27 years as a makeup artist. With her unique insight into bringing out women's beauty (at EVERY age), she created our original Boom cosmetics and skincare line. "As women age, looking fresh rather than made up is the key," Cindy said.

“The biggest makeup mistake that middle-aged women make is putting on too much under-eye concealer,” Cindy said. “At home, it might look okay, but in the daylight, it just looks like a bunch of gunk under your eyes. The older you get, the less makeup you should wear. It’s not a blank canvas anymore.”

Long before Cindy founded BOOM!, she had two very successful careers—first as a makeup artist, and then as a silver-haired supermodel.

Cindy began her career as a makeup artist in late-1970s San Francisco. Working for Macy's, Esprit and others, she pioneered the "natural look" with her models—which later became the inspiration for Boom cosmetics.

Soon after Cindy let her silver hair grow in, she was spotted on a New York sidewalk by fashion photographer Steven Meisel's scout. At 49, she began her second career as a silver-haired supermodel. During the next two decades, she was featured in ads for Dolce & Gabbana, DKNY, Olay, Nivea, L.L. Bean, Target and more.

Having spent nearly three decades as a makeup artist and another two as a supermodel, Cindy decided—in her early 60s—to go into the cosmetics business herself. She wanted to design a line of cosmetics that was all about revealing, embracing and celebrating women's natural beauty at every age. We are proud to say that she succeeded...and BOOM! was born. Today, Boomstick Trio is still our customer favorite, creating the dewy natural look ideal for all skin types and tones at all ages.

3. How do I choose a color to match my skin?

All three of these Boomsticks are universal, specially designed to work with every woman’s skin type and tone.

1. Boomstick Glo is an all-natural moisturizer for every skin type. Boom customers use this little stick to moisturize even sensitive skin.

2. Boomstick Color’s rich berry shade blends to match your skin tone. Designed to match the color of your skin when your circulation is revved up, we call this Boomstick the “color of happiness” because it makes you look like you’re naturally blushing with pleasure.

3. Boomstick Glimmer comes in a shimmering pearlescent color. Boomstick Glimmer blends to match your skin tone, creating a subtle, natural, healthy-looking radiance for yourself.

4. How do I apply these sticks—and in what order?

Boomsticks are versatile and customizable, so feel free to experiment to find what works for you.

Here’s what we suggest to get you started...

Step #1: Start by moisturizing with Boomstick Glo. Start with a clean, dry face. Glide or dab this Boomstick onto your cheekbones, forehead, around your mouth and on your lips. Then use your fingertips to blend it in.

Step #2: Add Boomstick Color everywhere you blush. Dab Boomstick Color onto the apples of your cheeks, across your forehead, down the sides of your neck and on your décolletage if you’re wearing a low-cut top. Blend with your fingers.

Step #3: Apply Boomstick Glimmer for a radiant glow. Dab this shimmery Boomstick onto your eyelids, the inner corners of your eyes, under your browbones and along your cheekbones.

If you’re going out for the evening, add Boomstick Glimmer to your décolletage and shoulders for extra sparkle—especially if you’re wearing a dress or blouse with an open neckline.

Step #4: Finish with your lips. Dab Boomstick Color onto your lips for a natural-looking color that matches your skin. Then, dab Glimmer onto your cupid’s bow and the center of your lips.

That’s it! Most customers can apply all three Boomsticks in 10 minutes or less.

5. Do you have to use all three sticks together?

You can use all three Boomsticks together or individually. It’s entirely up to you!

(If you’re wondering, all three are sold together as the Boomstick Trio, but you can also order each Boomstick individually if you like.)

6. Will Boomsticks cover brown spots or blemishes?

All Boom products are designed to reveal—rather than conceal—your natural beauty.

For that reason, we do not offer concealers or foundations that are designed to cover, hide or camouflage brown spots, dark circles or blemishes.

7. Can I use other products with Boomsticks?

Absolutely! You can use Boomsticks with any other products you like.

For example, some customers use mascara, like Boom Bright, or eyeliner with their Boomsticks. If you’d like to try this, apply Boomsticks first, then mascara or eyeliner.

Other Boom customers use a foundation with their Boomsticks. First, moisturize with Boomstick Glo. Then apply a creamy foundation that matches your skin tone exactly. After that, follow up with Boomstick Color and Boomstick Glimmer.

8. What do Boomsticks feel and look like on your skin?

Boomsticks feel soft and natural on your skin.

Cindy designed these cream-based cosmetic sticks because traditional powder cosmetics like blushes, eyeshadows and bronzers can settle into the skin's natural texture, drawing attention to fine lines or wrinkles.

Instead, these creamy moisturizing Boomsticks highlight your unique natural features without looking (or feeling) overly made up.

9. How long do Boomsticks last? What is the shelf life?

You can expect Boomstick Color to last 6–8 months with daily use. Boomstick Glimmer lasts a little longer, about 8–12 months. Boomstick Glo generally lasts 2–4 months, depending on how often you use it. (It also fits in your purse or pocket, so you can moisturize on the go.)

Boomsticks Color and Glimmer have an unopened shelf life of 24 months and a PAO (period after opening) of 12 months. Boomstick Glo has an unopened shelf life of 12 months and a PAO of 6 months.

10. How big are they?

Boomsticks are compact, convenient and ideal for travel! Each stick contains 8 grams/0.28 oz of product.

You can expect these Boomsticks to last 6–8 months with daily use.

11. Are Boomsticks scented?

Nope! Boomsticks do not have any added scent or fragrance.

12. Can I mix and match the sticks to build my own Trio?

Boomstick Trio still contains Boomstick Glo, Boomstick Color and Boomstick Glimmer, our three original Boomsticks. Cindy Joseph designed the Trio with this combination to provide an entire makeup routine in one bag.

At this time, we do not have a customizable option for Boomstick Trio, although it is something we might consider in the future.

Just wow!!!
I purchased the Boomstick Trio after discovering the product on Facebook. I was intrigued that the products were designed for mature women who weren’t trying to hide their skin under products. I also liked the simplicity of the products. I’ve been using the Trio for about two weeks and can report that they are easy to use, feel light and natural and give my skin a healthy natural glow. Really glad I purchased.
