Nourishing Your Skin in the Colder Months
Winter has arrived! In many parts of the world, that means it’s now the colder, drier months.
The hot cocoa, snow and cozy sweaters that come with colder temperatures are amazing. But winter makes it harder to maintain our skin’s natural radiance.
Cold, dry air is harsh on the skin. We spend lots of time indoors where heating systems drain our skin’s natural moisture. Then we go outside, where we’re bundled up, braced against the wind, that can dry out and chap our skin.
Being outdoors in winter might give our cheeks a healthy flush, but for the most part, the winter months make it difficult to hang onto our well-hydrated, glowing skin.
Here are a few things I’ve found that keep my skin stay glowing and radiant, even when the temperature dips below zero and the wind is tough on my skin.
1. Add two coats of moisturizer.
Moisture is always the key to skin that looks and feels great, but it’s even more crucial in the colder months.
Often, when the thermostat heads below zero, I add another layer of moisturizer to my daily routine. When it’s warm out, I use Boomsilk as my go-to moisturizer. But when we start heading into winter, I add a layer of Boomstick Glo underneath that layer of Boomsilk.
Boomstick Glo is virtually the same recipe as Boomsilk, so these two moisturizers mix together easily. The difference is Boomstick Glo comes in a stick form, so it’s little denser than Boomsilk. This denser consistency provides an extra layer of protection when I apply it underneath my regular Boomsilk.
I find that first layer insulates my skin and gives it a little extra protection against harsh winds and drying radiator heat! You can also try Boom Nectar, which is an extra-rich serum that nourishes and protects in the colder months.
2. Try steam.
To me, nothing feels better after coming in from the cold than a steam with essential oils.
It’s easy. All you have to do is fill a sink or large bowl with a teakettle of hot water, add a few drops of an essential oil like lavender or neroli (they smell amazing), drape a towel over your head and steam your face.
It opens up your pores, drenches your skin with moisture, and temporarily dilates your blood vessels, which leads to increased blood flow, oxygen, and nutrients.
An added bonus for winter: steaming your face is also great for clearing your sinuses! So if you’re fighting a cold, this trick will nourish your skin and help clear your breathing.
3. Switch to a gentler cleanser.
During the warmer months, I like to use a gentle, natural soap on my face—especially if I’ve been out in the humid air.
But when it gets colder out, any kind of soap—even the gentlest and most organic—can feel too harsh, and zap my skin of all its natural radiance.
In the winter months, I like to switch to a gentler cleanser like Boom Clean. This daily cleanser contains moisturizing ingredients so your skin is never left dry. I also ditch the washcloth (which I love for exfoliation), and apply Boom Clean with my hands instead.
Anything that gives a bit of a lighter touch makes my skin really happy in the winter!
