New: Introducing the Earth-Friendly Scrub Bottle

We are proud to have so many Boom customers who care about the Earth as much as we do.

So often, we hear from customers who are taking strides to protect this planet. You’re doing inspiring things like composting, shopping with reusable bags, planting pollinator gardens and choosing skin care and other items with sustainable ingredients.

Here at BOOM!, we are also looking for new ways to be more eco-conscious. You continue to inspire us to make decisions to serve our beautiful Earth.

With that in mind, we are thrilled to announce that we have a new Earth-friendly bottle for our deep-cleaning exfoliant, Boom Scrub. This new bottle is very easy to use. You simply squeeze it to get every last bit of Boom Scrub out of this new packaging.

This is even more exciting… Our new Earth-friendly bottle is made from a green plastic which is much healthier for the planet than standard plastics.

New plastic derived from sugarcane

Your Boom Scrub will now arrive in a new bottle that looks and feels like conventional plastic. However, this plastic is anything but “conventional.”

It’s an Earth-friendly plastic that’s derived from sugarcane. We chose this unique material because it has a far smaller carbon footprint than traditional plastics, which rely on fossil fuels like oil or gas for production.

We searched the globe to find the right green materials to redesign our Boom Scrub packaging. Our journey for Boom Scrub’s new green bottle took us all the way to a sugarcane plantation in Brazil. Or more specifically, a sugarcane plantation in Brazil’s absolutely gorgeous Center-South region, which is more than 1,500 miles south of the Amazon Rainforest. You may be wondering: “Why Brazil?” Well, we did our research.

After checking out several possibilities, we discovered a Brazil-based company called Braskem. This inspiring company supports regenerative agriculture. Braskem is known around the world for their forward-thinking sustainability efforts. For us, Braskem manufactures the green plastic that creates our Scrub bottles.

In Brazil, there is a federal framework in place under the Sugarcane Agro-ecological Zoning Policy that prohibits planting sugarcane in high-biodiversity areas like rainforests.

So, instead of a high-biodiversity region, the sugarcane used to make our new Boom Scrub bottles is grown on degraded pastureland.

Once, the soil on this former pastureland was depleted. But now, sugarcane production has added life and nutrients to recover the soil. That increases the overall health of the land.

Sugarcane = less carbon dioxide

This Brazilian sugarcane also helps clean carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

When fossil fuels are burned, greenhouse gasses are emitted into the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the most commonly produced greenhouse gas. Sugarcane removes CO2 from the atmosphere to perform photosynthesis, so this plant can grow.

Once the sugarcane is ready to be harvested, farmers gather the stalks and send them on to their next phase.

These farmers adhere to strict environmental standards when harvesting the sugarcane that includes a mandate to never use harvest-burning techniques. (That’s important because wildfires are a rising concern in Brazil—and fires emit more CO2 into the air.)

(That’s important because wildfires are a rising concern in Brazil—and fires emit more CO2 into the air.)

After it’s harvested, the sugarcane is sent to an ethylene plant where it is processed to extract ethanol. Braskem then uses that ethanol to make the green plastic for our new Boom Scrub bottles.

Wonder what this process entails?

We were curious too, so we broke it down for you...

First, it’s important to know that ethanol is a renewable fuel made from plant material. To make ethanol out of sugarcane, the sugarcane is broken down into a sugarcane juice and fermented. The fermented cane juice produces the ethanol.

Next, the ethanol goes through a dehydration process and transformed into “green ethylene.” Ethylene is a gaseous plant hormone. When you’re making plastic, ethylene acts as a substitute for traditional fossil fuels like oil or gas.

Through a fancy chemistry term, “polymerization,” the ethylene forms a molecular reaction.

This reaction creates the polymer used to make the green plastic, also known as “green polyethylene.” This is the plastic which Boom Scrub’s new bottles are made from!

The entire process of creating this green plastic is essentially waste free. They even use the “waste” generated from crushing the sugarcane (known as “bagasse”) as electricity to power the entire ethylene production process.

It’s a closed-loop energy cycle that makes for an overall self-sufficient process—that’s all dependent on the sugarcane plant! We think that’s pretty cool. The process even produces surplus energy, which is sent back to the power grid and contributes to clean energy for Brazil.

Just to recap: Our new Boom Scrub bottles are made from an Earth-friendly process that uses sugarcane crops to encourage healthier, nutrient-rich soil, remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, and produce green plastic that has a smaller carbon footprint than traditional plastics.

Oh, and they’re recyclable too...

We also love that these new Boom Scrub bottles are 100% recyclable.

Once you are finished using your Boom Scrub, simply rinse out your bottle with warm water. Then you can recycle it with your regular recycling items.
