Martine, I'm 46.
46 compared to 26, I think I'm in better shape now than I was then. I feel more settled in my body. I'm able to sort of feel out when I'm not feeling well and when I am. And the only thing that is different is that because I have so much more life experience, I can't really tell whatever I'm craving. Sometimes I'm, like, "What is it? What is that taste that I'm craving?"
What does it mean to be a confident woman? It means being okay with who you are. Loving who you are, in this very moment. Being okay with if you have any extra weight on, if you wanna put on extra weight, how you look and feel.
Being confident is being happy with where you are.
And I had a kid pretty young, so I wasn't really confident in my 20s until, I don't know, until 30. And then I felt like, "Oh, that's what it is. I get it."
I would say I decided to go all the way natural when I was about 36, 37. I was doing a lot of yoga, hot yoga. So my hair grows fast. You know, I wasn't doing permanent because I would have to do it like every two weeks or so. So I just said, "You know, why am I killing myself?" Like, I'm kinda lazy when it comes to my hair. Like, if I have to keep up with the haircuts, if I have to keep up with the dyeing, it's just not gonna happen. So I just let it go, and it's always been a great experience. You know, people in the street stop me and say, "It's great," so.
I had them. I think I was turning 10 or 11, and they were just there. I don't think I noticed when they came, but all of a sudden I noticed people saying, "Where did you get your freckles?" And I was like, "What? What freckles?"
What makes me feel vital and alive? A good day, which could just be sitting out in the sun, good beach day, reading a great book, or watching a great series.
Feeling, also, connected to things. Having a great night out with someone, or friends, or, you know, the kids, or whatever. It's just any time I get to laugh, I feel great.
I'm looking forward to grandchildren. I hear, you know, what's the saying, "If I knew what grandchildren were like, I would have skipped children altogether." So I'm looking forward to that, to spoiling someone and then giving them back. My son is 22, my daughter is 18, and another daughter that's 17, a senior in high school.
I try to pass onto them that you can't hold on to the superficial stuff. I never press makeup on them or anything. I've always told my story, like, "When I got to high school I couldn't wait to wear makeup." But, then, it was, "You know what, I'd rather sleep the extra 20 minutes than have to worry about all of that." My middle child got that, my youngest one's a little more extra. She'll put on the makeup and whatever. But less and less, more and more, she does less and less. They're starting to get more into how they're doing in school and what they wanna do with their life. It's less about how they look.
It's important for more women to hear the message, because what's out there now is all about stopping yourself from aging. It's about being 20 forever. And when people talk about how "I wish I was 18 again," or, "I wish I was 20 again," I'm always like, "No, I don't."
Like, I mean I'm okay. I know so much more now. I'm okay with who I am. When you're in your 20s and your 30s, you're always worried about, "Oh, I can't, I don't wanna age. I don't wanna this, I don't wanna that. I'm worried about how I look in my jeans, or how I..." You know, you start to let all of that go, and that's good.
I think women need to hear that more. It's okay to get older. It's okay to age. It's okay to have a few wrinkles, big deal.
