Let's Talk About Age
Video Transcript:
Emily: Hi, I'm Emily Vickers, I am 66 years young.
Victoria: I'm Victoria Gardner Smith, and I'm 51.
Debra: My name is Debra, and I'm 63 years old.
Roxanne: My name is Roxanne Hancock, and I'm 45 years old.
Rosalie: I'm Rosalie Hancock, I'm 74 years old.
Karen: My name is Karen and I'm 60 and three-quarters.
Laura: Okay, very nice. How does it feel to be 60 and three-quarters?
Karen: I don't know. I thought I'd be scared talking about age, but actually, it was fun.
Victoria: Oh, it was fantastic. I mean, well, it was fantastic, but little...I was taken back a little just even as my answers started coming out.
Debra: Oh I thought it was great. I think that there is time for a little reflection, but you know, these are things that you think about. Where are you? How are you? Where did I...how did I get here?
How did I get to be 63, and how did I get to be here doing what I'm doing?
Female: I'm really comfortable talking about my age. So was actually kind of fun to talk about what it's like, how I feel about it, why I never dyed my hair.
Female: I feel like a celebration. It's great, it feels like I'm finally...well, I'm fully accepting my age and just like being here and announcing to the world, yeah, I'm 40 and I'm great with it.
Laura: So do you find that you don't get to talk about aging often in this way?
Victoria: Not often enough. Not often enough. It's really surprising to me.
Certain friends of mine, sure, but I can count them on one hand. I know so many women who do not wanna talk about aging, and it's placed almost like a taboo subject.
Roxanne: It feels good to talk about my age. In my 20s, I thought that turning 40 would be the end.
And in fact...so when I did turn 40, that night I actually had a conversation with myself, and it was liberating.
That night I decided, no, I'm actually very comfortable with the way my life is, and I'm going to improve upon it.
Laura: How did it feel just now talking about your age?
Rosalie: Great. I've lived a good life, and I just feel great about it.
Female: Was such a great opportunity to have to talk about being my age, and feeling my beauty, and feeling sexy at my age, and with my silver hair. It was really great and a lot of fun.
Karen: You know, I mean, the number is one thing, the feeling is a whole other thing.
You know, I see the number and I go, wow, that's a lot of time, and I've been here for a long time. And at the same time, I feel 5, 7, 27, 32. I don't feel age, I feel wonderful.
Female: Once you hit almost 60, you get to take a step back and say, I have a view from up here now, I'm kind of up above a little bit, looking over the horizon at things, and I can see where my place is in this world.
Feeling confident that you've got your place in the world and that you look your best and feel your best, that's beautiful.
Debra: You know, getting older is not the end of the world, it's not an albatross, it really is a declaration of success and perseverance. That's what getting older is about.
