9 Truths We Discover After 50
9 Truths We
Discover After 50
Our anti-aging society tells us a lot of stories about life after 50.
We’re told that we lose value and become invisible as we age. They say it’s “all downhill” after 50.
The thing is, once we actually turn 50, we quickly realize none of this is true.
We discover that life after 50 is full of joy, abundance and potential.
Our founder, Cindy Joseph, said, “People think of age as a mountain. You hit the peak and then you fall off the cliff. This is archaic. Flip that into a V. Think of your life as getting BETTER, not worse.”
As we go along, we discover even more about life that often contradicts what we’re told about aging.
We share nine of these truths below.
Do you know them all? Keep reading to find out.
1. Our value is innate.
When we’re in the bloom of youth, it’s easy to believe cultural lies that say we’re only valuable when we’re beautiful and only beautiful when we’re young.
By the time we reach 50, as we feel our value growing instead of diminishing, we begin to realize how those lies hold us back.
We get to discover that our value isn’t based on appearance, age or accomplishments. True value is an innate quality of who we are—no matter what.
2. Confidence is beautiful.
One of the many lessons Cindy Joseph taught us was that beauty comes from confidence. Cindy said, “If you look in the mirror and you think, ‘You go, girl. You look awesome,’ you’re going to walk out the door and you are going to look attractive. Because you’re happy and you’re celebrating yourself.”
After 50, we have the opportunity to discover a well of confidence within us that’s separate from how we look and embrace the true beauty that comes from within.
3. Every birthday deserves celebration.
Do you remember the excitement of a birthday when you were younger? We approached milestone birthdays—16, 18, 21—with celebratory anticipation.
After 30 or 40, we often lose excitement toward becoming another year older. We might stop “making a big deal.” Some may even dread or avoid acknowledging birthdays.
But after 50, we realize that aging is a gift not everyone gets to enjoy. Each birthday becomes an opportunity to celebrate all that you’ve done and all that’s still ahead.
That’s why at BOOM!, we suggest celebrating every birthday.
4. There are no rules.
In our teens, 20s and 30s there are so many “shoulds.” Go to college, get a job, get married, have children, etc. We’re taught that our life has to look a certain way in order to be a “good” life.
Experience shows us that there’s no one right way to do anything. That lesson gives us the freedom to create the life of our dreams according to our own rules.
5. You know more now than you ever have.
Every year of your life bestows wisdom, knowledge, skill and experience.
That means that right now, you know more than you’ve ever known.
With this deep range of knowledge and wisdom, you can make decisions with more confidence than ever before.
6. No more sweating the small stuff.
One of the greatest gifts that comes with age is the ability to recognize smaller worries that often feel much larger than they are—and let them go.
During our first Boom Ladies’ Night, Dulcy Stewart described how it’s much easier for her to release small worries now, at age 71.
In fact, many in our Boom community talk about feeling more peaceful, less stressed and less worried or anxious after 50.
7. Comparisons aren’t worth it.
So many women spend their 20s and 30s comparing themselves to others. In fact, our culture conditions us to judge other women and ourselves in myriad ways.
But time and experience teach us that comparisons aren’t worth the stress they cause. As we release them, we save so much energy and are more able to embrace ourselves.
8. Skin care is more important than ever.
Skin is resilient, especially when we’re young.
After 50, however, our skin begins to show the accumulated effects of sun, exposure and time. As it does, we learn that our skin is worth protecting. We also discover it’s never too late to start caring for our skin.
9. You can reinvent yourself anytime.
Every year of life contains endless possibilities and potential. You can reinvent yourself, learn something new or make new friends at any age. You can do anything and be anything you want to be at 50, 60, 70, 80 or older.
