Changing seasons means changing weather. As we shift into fall, the temperatures drop and the air begins to dry out. That change in weather can be tough on your skin.
Fortunately, skin is also incredibly resilient. Oil production increases naturally in dry weather to keep your skin soft, lubricated and protected.
As we age, however, our skin’s ability to adjust slows down. We also produce less oil in general with age. The switch to colder, drier air can leave your skin dry, flakey and struggling to catch up.
A few adjustments to your fall skincare routine can help your skin stay soft and glowing throughout the season.
1. Take shorter, cooler showers.
A long, hot shower may sound lovely on a cool day. But hot water dissolves and removes the natural oils on your skin…the very oils that help skin retain moisture.
In dry weather, hot showers can exacerbate itchy, dry skin. Try a shorter, cooler shower instead to keep your skin’s natural barrier intact.
Then while your skin is still wet, apply a lotion or cream to lock in moisture.
2. Cleanse gently.
Keeping your skin clean is essential to keeping it healthy. But cleansing with harsh soaps, irritating dyes or allergy-provoking perfumes can do more damage than good.
Avoid drying or irritating your skin by choosing a cleanser that’s soap-free, dye-free and perfume-free.

3. Use a humidifier or try a steam treatment.
