Do you have hooded eyes?
Some people are born with hooded eyes. Many more develop hooded eyes as they age. Collagen and elastin begin to break down, which can cause our upper eyelids to droop.
Some of us with hooded eyes give up on eye makeup because so many of the usual tips don’t work for us.
Different makeup techniques are needed to help hooded eyes dazzle.
Whether your hooded eyes are new or you’ve had them all your life, we hope these tips will help.
1. Emphasize your brows.
Our eyebrows have so many jobs, from practical to aesthetic. They protect our eyes, frame our faces and help us express our thoughts and emotions.
As we age, our brows tend to thin and lighten—especially at the outer edges. Our brow texture can change as well, sometimes becoming more coarse and unruly.
Adding back volume, definition and hold can help your brows do all of their jobs more effectively and lift the appearance of your eyes.
We suggest Boom Brow™, our lightweight brow mousse. This mousse adds subtle color enhancement, volume, definition and hold to your brows. Best of all, it takes just a minute or two to apply.
Remove the wand and brush on Boom Brow in an upward and outward motion. For more color or definition, just brush on another layer.
This lightweight mousse lasts all day and can be layered without clumping, flaking or smudging.
2. Skip powder eyeshadow.
When hooded eyes are open, much of the eyelid is hidden.
For this reason, many shadow techniques don’t work for us.
In addition, applying powder eyeshadow at 50, 60, 70 and beyond can emphasize the texture of your eyelids.
Rather than spend time and energy applying eyeshadow that disappears when your eye is open, we suggest highlighting the visible areas of your eye instead.
First, apply a highlighter just under your browbone to draw light and attention upward. We suggest Boomstick GlimmerⓇ, our creamy highlighting cosmetic.
Boomstick Glimmer is a shimmery, neutral highlighter that adds subtle radiance to your skin. Dab it just under the outside edge of your browbone and blend with your finger.
Next, use your fingertip to dab a tiny bit of Boomstick Glimmer onto the inner corner of your eye. This helps open up the eye area.
Finally, if your lid shows a little, you can dab Boomstick Glimmer in the center of your lid, just above the lash line.
3. Be cautious with eyeliner.
Eyeliner can make or break your look depending on how you use it.
Too heavy or too long of a line can drag the eye downward.
If you choose to wear eyeliner with hooded eyes, we suggest keeping the line thin and tight to the lash line.
Then, stop the line before you reach the outside edge of your lash. Hooded eyes are often turned downward at the edge—lining to the end of the lash line can visually pull your eye down.
4. Beautiful, bold lashes are key.
Bold, beautiful lashes help open up top-heavy eyes. We suggest Boom Bold™, our volumizing mascara.
Boom Bold lifts and holds your lashes while adding bold, jet-black volume that opens the eye and makes it look bigger.
It’s also waterproof so it won’t transfer to your lid—a common problem with hooded eyes.
Place the wand at the base of your lashes and wiggle as you brush upwards. Heavier mascara at the base of your lashes also provides lash-line definition without applying eyeliner.
With this last step, your hooded eyes will be bold and beautiful. We hope you love them—we certainly do!
