1. Go Cold Turkey
Do you prefer to keep things uncomplicated? If so, this first method is for you.
Simply stop dyeing your hair! As your silver grows in, continue getting haircuts at regular intervals until your last dyed locks are gone.
Pros and Cons
The benefits of this straightforward method are the time and money you’ll save. Once you stop dyeing your hair, you’ll free up hours and potentially hundreds of dollars once spent at the salon.
Who wouldn’t love that?
If your dyed hair color is very different from your incoming silver, you’ll likely see a demarcation line as your natural hair grows in. If you have lighter dyed hair, the line may appear less stark (but not always, and maybe not to you).
Until your dyed color is completely grown out and gone—which could take months or years depending on the length of your hair—you won’t really know how your silver hair will look.
Before going cold turkey, consider whether you’re likely to get discouraged midway through. If so, you might prefer another method.
On the other hand, if you have the patience and don’t mind the line, this path is as simple as the silver-hair journey gets.
2. Silver shortcut
Want to cut the journey short? Maybe you’re ready for a more dramatic look, you’re feeling impatient or you don’t like lingering transitions.
If so, our second method is a short adventure from dyed to silver by way of an eye-catching haircut.
When starting down this path, allow your silver roots to grow out a few inches. Then visit a stylist you trust for a low-maintenance, flirty pixie or buzz cut.
This technique provides immediate results and highlights your bold, silver-haired beauty for all the world to see.
Pros and Cons
If you don’t want to spend money or time blending out your silver strands and you’re eager for the silver-hair destination sooner than later, this path is for you.
Whether or not you’ve done it before, cutting your hair very short may feel a bit scary. After all, growing out a pixie or buzz cut to your desired length could take a long time.
On the other hand, you may discover you love the ease of short hair, especially if you’re a swimmer or work out often. It also makes a bold, confident statement.
Either way, this method is perfect for women who are ready for something entirely new, wear very short hair already or aren’t intimidated by big changes.
3. Blend it down
Want to keep your length but don’t want to put up with a demarcation line? A talented color artist can blend your emerging silver into the rest of your hair.
The right hairstylist will use highlights, lowlights, silver dye or other strategies to blend your silver and dyed hair together.
In the space of a few hours, you could go from silver roots to a fabulous hybrid silver-hair look.
Pros and Cons
Those who are more nervous about going silver, want a more gradual transition or keep their length while avoiding the sometimes-obvious demarcation line may choose this popular path.
The professional component means this method may be more expensive (and time-consuming) than the others. You’ll likely need several salon treatments over a year or more to maintain the blended balance between silver and dyed hair.
Even so, a subtle, gradual transition allows ample time to acclimate along your journey. You’ll also have the chance to see how you feel about going silver right away since your growing silver will be blended in and down with the rest of your hair.
Love it? Great, keep going! Don’t love it? No problem—it’s easy to go back to what you had before or try a different path entirely.
With one of these fabulous paths, every woman can gracefully embrace her silver-hair journey at every age.
